National Peening designs and builds most of their own equipment to be the most effective and efficient shot peening and surface enhancement machinery in the industry. We can custom tailor our equipment to meet our customer’s application. We can accommodate all sizes of parts from small parts (springs, pins) to large components requiring the use of our larger CNC system capable of handling parts up to 30,000 pounds. We also utilize 4 axis single nozzle and 6 axis multi-nozzle CNC systems.

High Energy Finishing

High-energy finishing describes any form of abrasive media-based parts finishing that uses more than the force of gravity to deburr, radius, smooth, burnish, descale or otherwise prepare parts. It might be easier to define what high energy is not. It is not tumbling barrels: open- or close-ended, conical, octagonal or cylindrical. Tumbling barrels have been the workhorses of mass finishing for hundreds of years. They work on the simplest of principals. Mix a part long enough with the right abrasive media, and the burrs or imperfections will eventually wear off.

Vibratory Finishing

Vibratory finishing is a type of mass finishing manufacturing process used to deburr, radius, descale, burnish, clean, and brighten a large number of work pieces. The key to achieving the desired finish is the proper media, correct chemical composition, time and vibratory amplitude. The tub or bowl of the vibratory machine and all of its contents are then vibrated. The vibratory action causes the media to rub against the work pieces which yield the desired result. Depending on the application this can be either a dry or wet process.


National Peening Wallingford (DBA Technical Metal Finishing or TMF) has developed a unique process capability to “super finish” aero and industrial gas turbine components. This process routinely achieves surface finishes of 20 micro inch / 0.5 micrometer surfaces and can be modified to achieve 10 µin / .25 µm RA surfaces. TMF’s process employs proprietary media size and composition selected to achieve the best possible results taking in to consideration both the part material and geometry.

TMF’s process does not utilize any chemicals that could affect or attack the grain structure of traditional or advanced super alloy materials. The super finishing can be tailored to the specific part geometry with careful attention to assure no foreign objects during processing can enter the internal passages of the cooled turbine airfoil components. This process can be used to improve the surface finish of machined components, raw castings, and coated airfoils. TMF super finishes gas turbine components for Pratt & Whitney, GE-Aviation, Rolls Royce, Ltd and Siemens Power Systems.
